Jose Mourinho suffered an embarrassing exit in the Champions League after being knocked out by Paris St Germain, who was strong opponents nonetheless, in the last 16 stage. Last season, the club made it to the semifinals where they were knocked out by Atletico Madrid.
This was seen as a major disappointment for the club, as they were seen as favourites to reach the finals. Hoping to build on the success, Mourinho would have at least targeted a final spot this season. However, Chelsea performed very poorly against PSG – especially in the second leg at Stamford Bridge – to get knocked out 3-3 on aggregate. PSG progressed on the away goals rule.
Mourinho is an incredibly successful manager, who has lifted the Champions League title with two different teams. However, he is unable to repeat this feat with Chelsea. The Portuguese has won every major title with the blues except the European competition. Once again, they are looking front-runners for the Premier League title. If Chelsea lift this trophy, it would be the third league title for Mourinho in English football. After being knocked out in the Champions League, Mourinho has tried to contain the disappointment by saying that this exit would surely help the club’s objective of winning the league title for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
“Chelsea won three Premier League titles and people know that number clearly, but you can analyse in a different way.In the last nine years they won it once, so it is not easy to win, and in these nine years Chelsea was never in the end of March with six points more than the second [placed team], so we have a good situation in our hands and the way we work last week, the way we work this week, I think the players are very confident. I think the tendency of our team is to improve,” said Mourinho.
